I recently took a telephone enquiry for a cruise with flights either side. I offered my client the option of a flight upgrade on British Airways, from World Traveller to World Traveller plus. He was unsure and asked me what I thought he should do. Well its not a standard answer for each person, it is definitely down to personal choice. But this question got me thinking....Are upgrades worth the extra cost???
In my opinion, for a long haul flight, the answer is yes! I recently booked a flight from Sydney, Australia to London Heathrow for a friend of mine, and as I used to work for British Airways, I am lucky enough to have to have friends who work for BA who are able to get me a friends and family discount. It's not what you know, it's who you know, hey!! We paid £1200 return for World Traveller Plus seats, which is a brilliant price. He is over 6 feet tall and usually finds himself squashed and uncomfortable in a normal economy seat. So the extra leg room was fantastic for him. The seat pitch is larger than a standard economy seat (usually by a long way), so much more spacious and comfortable. You usually have more selection on food, beverages and entertainment channels on the tv, and can have drinks on request. Most airlines will offer free newspapers and comfort packs, containing blankets, head rest, eyemasks, socks, and toothbrust and toothpaste. You would usually have priority check-in and boarding too, so it cuts down those annoying queues at the airport. For a long journey, like the Sydney one (almost 24 hours) I says it's definitely worth it. I have been lucky enough to have flown both Business and Club Class and have to say it is amazing, and makes flying a lot more enjoyable. The only problem is, once you flown Business Class, it's impossible to go back to Economy!! Ever wondered why people (usually celebrities) make jokes about turning left on a plane? This is why. Business, Club and First are to the left when you board and Economy is to the right. So once, you've turned left, right is no longer 'right'!
I'm sure my friend would want me to add that on his return flight to Sydney, the cabin crew upgraded him to Club World where he had a fully flat bed, which ensured he felt rested once he landed into Sydney. He is very proud of this upgrade!!
